St. Gertrude the Great was a thirteenth century Benedictine nun. She was a scholar and writer, and is very closely associated with devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and souls in Purgatory. The St. Gertrude chaplet, which is prayed on the regular rosary, is intoned for such souls. This medal is a great size for attachment to a large bead rosary.
