In Christian legend, before his execution, St. Peter was imprisoned in the Mamertine prison in Rome. The Mamertine housed mostly political prisoners. The reverse of this medal is a relief of the upper prison cell, which is now a chapel. The Mamertine is an impactful place to visit if you ever have the chance to visit Rome -- it's cold, dank and truly puts one in mind of the sufferings of the martyrs. On the front of this reproduction medal is St. Peter holding the keys given to him by Jesus.
