From 1695 to 1829, laws were enacted in Ireland to subjugate Catholics and Catholic devotional items were outlawed. The shape of the penal crucifix is long and thin so that it might be concealed up a sleeve. The Irish penal tenner was a single decade of beads with such a crucifix on one end and a finger ring on the other. This gives us our modern-day tenner, which is easy to carry and pray throughout the day.
