Auray is a site in northwest France which long revered St. Anne, the mother of Holy Mary. A 6th century chapel there had fallen to ruin, but in 1624, St. Anne appeared to a peasant there, and instructed that a new chapel be built on the site of the old. When digging to build the new chapel, a buried statue of St. Anne was discovered, which confirmed the apparition to the locals. St. Anne is the patronness of women in labor and grandmothers.
